I saw something interesting in an AP article today...

...but then I saw this footnote:
Copyright 2009 The Associated Press. The information contained in the AP news report may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or otherwise distributed without the prior written authority of The Associated Press.
So I won't tell you about it. They won't get a link or any traffic from here. Now on to other interesting things...

  1. Big stink among leftie bloggers about this when the copyright was first put out this year. Some people just don't understand the internet...

  2. Yeah, I've hesitated on their stuff too, for exactly the same reason. And eventually, often shortly, some other source has much the same story. I'm happy to give credit to sources that want it. AP apparently doesn't.

  3. Oh my gosh, REALLY? That's just about the stoopidest copyright policy I've ever seen.

  4. how exactly is not linking to their stuff helping?

if I understand right, the AP makes its money from letting other news sources (CNN, MSNBC, etc) copy its content and report on it.

By not linking to them, copying their content, or mentioning what the news was, you're giving them exactly what they want.

Ideally, you would copy their content, but then you'd get sued. So the only legal way I can think of to protest their idiotic copyright policies is to find another source and link to them instead.

  5. @anonymous- since original credit is rarely given anymore (AP frequently picks up stories from nearby papers, slaps their copyright notice on them, then distributes them, and vice versa), I link to sites and organizations that are more reasonable. So if some clicks over from my blog, it isn't AP that gets the potential ad revenue. When I do link an AP story, it's paraphrased and short.

  6. Makes me think of the Shepherd Fairy (not at all sure about the spelling) Obama poster and the flak he took from AP.
