Smart phones owned by kindergartners and teachers

According to the 2008 data above, the percentage of K-2 children who own smart phones is approximately the same as the percentage of their teachers who have one!

Found at The Centered Librarian, citing the Drill Down column of The Journal: Transforming Education Through Technology.

  1. The chart was reproduced from "drilldown" a monthly feature of The Journal: Transforming Education Through Technology. It was in the August 2009 issue (volume 36, No 7, pg 42). The only attribution offered is the one in the graphic.

  2. This poll is definitely not accurate. There's no way almost 20% of K-2 children have smart phones. I doubt most kindergarten kids would even know the difference between a smart phone and a regular cell phone.

  3. Alex, I interact frequently with a kindergartner (granddaughter aged 5) and I assure you that while she may not know the technical difference between a smart phone and a regular cell, she can use my iPhone almost as well as I can. She does have a cellphone - one of those restricted to only a few numbers - and she does get a steady stream of text updates and IMs from those allowed access.

I am not sure exactly how I feel about all of this, but it is certainly happening and expanding rapidly.
