Acceptance of evolution in Western countries

Found at the National Geographic Society website. The graph speaks for itself, but there is some salient discussion at Reddit.

  1. You would think a country as advanced as ours would have this figured out already. The sad part is that it is totally possible to "believe" the Bible and still accept evolution, especially if you examine the Bible from a literary perspective, and not just a religious one. I love asking creationists "so God just made Dinosaur bones to trick us? Uh...Why?"

  2. Evolution and religion are not part of a dichotomy! I feel like this chart shows how poor the education system in the US is.

I am highly pleased that the website/article reads "acceptance of evolution." Way too many people are asked if they "believe in evolution," which doesn't make any sense because one believes in God, reincarnation, lucky pendants-- things that can't be proven with facts.

The correct verbage to use is to ask if someone "understands evolution." If you completely understand the concept and evidence involved, you should agree that evolution is fact. And if people don't, it's because they don't understand what it is, exactly, the same way I don't understand how the engine of a car works. But at least I know I'm not driving with magic. =)
