Human hair used for bird nest

When Brian Williams has his hair cut by his wife every month, he's not the only one who feels the benefit. His wife Joan collects the clippings on a sheet and shakes them out into the garden - where the birds then pick them up to make nests.

Mr Williams, 68, a retired teacher, was astonished to find that a goldfinch, a greenfinch and a robin have all collected his grey locks and used them to build homes in his garden.

  1. Sarah did this in "Sarah, Plain and Tall," the book and the movie. I always try to do this too, but I only cut my hair about once a year!

  2. You can also do this with strands of hair that come out from brushing; I tried this once, but I dont' think the birds wanted it.

  3. Hello, Brian Williams. I am hoping you will allow your bird nest photo (lined with white hair) to be used on the front cover of an Antrim House book. Our website is www.antrimhousebooks.com. Hopefully, Rennie (CT Poet Laureate 2015-2018 and publisher of Antrim House),

  9. I am having trouble navigating and will try again. Hello, Brian Williams. Would you allow your photo of a bird nest (with a cushioning of white hair) to be used on the front cover of an Antrim House book? Our website is www.antrimhousebooks.com. Hopefully, Robert McQuilkin

    1. Hello, Rennie/Robert.

I do have to admire your persistence in trying to get a response from this 12-year-old webpage. Since you are not a regular reader of this blog, you would not be aware that all the comments here are curated, and only approved for publication after review by me. I was away from the blog last night when your comments were submitted, and I just found them moments ago this morning.

A regular reader of the blog would know that I am not Brian Williams and that I always provide a source for the photos I post. The source was linked in the post, but the link may not have been seen by the junior staff member who found the page, so I'll offer it here again:

The photo has a watermark from the original photographer, whom you may be able to locate via the Daily Mail.

If you just need a quick generic photo of a bird's nest, you are welcome to harvest one of these, for which I am the photographer -

For free of course. But I have no photos of human hair incorporated into a nest.

With best wises for the success of your forthcoming book -
