I wondered (hoped) that perhaps it was a joke or a public service-type campaign in Britain to draw attention to nutrition and health. It appears to be a real family.
Yesterday 19-year-old Emma Chawner (above) was interviewed on a live phone-in radio program on Victoria Derbyshire's BBC Radio; she complained about not being given a chance in the job market because of her weight.
At that point, a listener phoned in and offered her a security job on the spot - "she rejected it out of hand, explaining that she 'didn't want to stand on a door watching people go in'."
So, I guess the whole theory in Trainspotting where Spud tries to earn his unemployment by pretending to want a job is fiction? I realize that was set in Scotland, but surely there is some kind of system that would weed these people out. If they don't at least pretend to be willing to work, how do they keep getting these payments? It makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how they do unemployment in England but in America, if you get offered a job, you MUST take it or you don't get unemployment. And, they don't care how crappy the job is. I clicked on the old link that you had about the family and it does seem like a joke. They are so brazen about their laziness. Like it's some kind of trophy to them!
