A gender-dependent visual acuity test

The photo above is illustrative of a striking disparity in visual image processing, with a prominent gender discrepancy.

Somewhere in the photo above is an airplane. Women are typically able to locate the plane in just a few milliseconds, but men require a longer time period by a factor of several magnitudes. Further studies are needed.

  1. Your conclusions are indeed consistent with the seminal studies by Blackwell dating back to 1948. In that study, the group of observers (young women aged 19 to 26) exhibited a remarkable ability to detect targets at detection threshold nearly an order of magnitude lower than, for example, Air Force studies using military pilots. These results (albeit limited) suggest that women have greater ability to visually detect targets in a cluttered scene.
