Ellie May Challis lost both lower legs (and both hands) during a bout of meningitis, during which she apparently developed DIC and ischemia of the distal extremities. She has now been fitted with a pair of carbon-fiber prosthetic legs similar to those worn by paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius.
