Time Magazine wants you to vote.
As I write this, the leading vote recipient is "moot," the founder of
4chan, one of the most innovative, influential, and profitable sites on the web. #2 is Rain, a Korean pop star. Apparently not resting on his laurels after having a room on the Space Station named after him, Stephen Colbert is in the 5th spot, with Jon Stewart just ahead of him in 4th.
Obama? 14th - well behind Morgan Tsvangirai and the Dalai Lama. George Bush is just ahead of Tina Fey. Sarah Palin is neck-and-neck with Bill O'Reilly and Jim Cramer.
One would think that Time would know that you have to do better than that if you want to effectively crowdsource something otherwise you get crap
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the previous remark. I assume moot has asked his readers to vote for him multiple times, as Colbert asks his Nation to do.
ReplyDeleteBritney Spears and T-Pain are more influential than Obama?? I just died a little inside.
ReplyDelete@Barbwire well that is exactly my point.
ReplyDeleteTime is trying to get at who are the most influential people in the world. They are clearly not getting a true representation of who people consider the most influential people in the world. They are getting a better representation of who some people think would be hilarious if listed as the most influential people in the world.
I contend it is because Time doesn't understand the internet very well and didn't anticipate people would try to game their system for laughs.
I think Time magazine understands quite well what they are doing. What they are doing is getting a lot of people to click on their webpage so they can sell advertising. They know you don't decide something by asking the great unwashed public for an opinion. But every click translates to more value for the url. This isn't journalism - its salesmanship.
