An article in the BBC today details how the country of Uruguay is trying to upgrade its marketing of
native amethyst (prized because of their natural dark color). The gemstone sells for $1-8 per kg. in Uruguay, where it is mined, but 20X that in other countries. They are trying to add value to the product by processing it into artworks or other finished products before export.
Blogged only for an excuse to feature the photo above. Many people (myself included) have geodes at home, and I've seen big ones at rock and mineral shows, often with amethyst interiors, but ... WOW!
