Mechanically separated meat, also known as mechanically recovered/reclaimed meat, is a paste-like meat product produced by forcing beef, pork or chicken bones, with attached edible meat, under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue. Mechanically separated meat has been used in certain meat and meat products since the late 1960s. This product can be contrasted with meat extracted by advanced meat recovery systems...
Mechanically separated meat must be labeled as "mechanically separated"... in the ingredients statement. Hot dogs can contain no more than 20 percent mechanically separated beef or pork...
Since bits of the spinal cord (the part most likely to be carrying BSE) and brain tissue often got mixed in with the rest of the meat, products using mechanically separated meat taken from the bodies of bovines were at higher risk for transmitting BSE to humans. As a result, in 1989 the United Kingdom tightened restrictions to help ensure that pieces of the spinal cord would not be present in mechanically separated meat taken from bovines.

You are trying to make us all vegetarians. First SA, and now this. I would never knowingly eat anything that looked so disgusting.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great process that might even be more efficient than the amount of meat my teeth can get off the bone. But I'm surprised they can get it to resemble actual meat after it starts out like this.
ReplyDeleteI always wondered what the mechanically seperated chicken was in the list of ingredients on hot dogs... now I know!
ReplyDeleteI made a video about MSM for Thanksgiving, you can see it here. What other delicious foods could be enjoyed this way?
ReplyDeleteMRM is disgusting, thank goodness I have not eaten meat for over 20 years. Prior to that I only ate lean meat or used it to make my own burgers. I have not eaten pork in over 30 years due to cruely yo the pigs. I feel the government having allowed this MRM in baby food is deplorable. I saw a recent programme with a hidden camera and they are still using it in some places. Babies don't need meat products, a litte extra carbohydrate like Farex or custard or pureed fruit is quite sufficient. No wonder we ruin our kids kidneys.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like strawberry frozen yogurt
