Norwegian prisons

They're not like American prisons...
There are rows of wooden desks and chairs, like any classroom, except each desk has a computer on it. "Every prisoner here has a computer in the classroom," he says, "and a computer in their cell."

"I don't suppose the prisoners have access to the internet," I say. Leif looks at me. "But of course," he says. And in their cells? "Yes." Leif explains that firewalls have been set up to ensure security is maintained. "But they must be able to access the internet," he says, "to help in their education and also so that they know they are still connected to the world."
Norway of course doesn't have many prisoners - 3,000 out of a population of 4,000,000. The United States has 1% of its population in prison. Food for thought...
