Large gold belt buckle ... from Stonehenge!


The buckle, along with bronze axe heads, daggers, and another gold artifact, were recovered from the grave at Bush Barrow on Normanton Down. The artifacts were first excavated in 1808, but have seldom been on display to the public.

Other images at the link illustrate how the items were worn and the delicate engraving on them. One wonders how many other gold artifacts have been scavenged from barrows over the centuries, perhaps even by the Romans, and subsequently melted down and "repurposed" to more prosaic forms.
