Two images from Shorpy. The upper one, dated December 15, 1864, shows
spectators watching the fight between Union and Confederate forces. I believe the same occurred at Gettysburg and other northern venues; it emphasizes how war has changed. The
lower image shows the Union outer line on the following day. I am often struck in Civil War images by the lack of vegetation on the ground; granted this is December, but it is also well south, so unless it was burned on purpose to clear the field of view, I suppose it has simply been trampled by foot traffic...
