Spasticville, Kansas

SPASTICVILLE, Kan., April 10 (UPI) -- The city administrator of Spasticville, Kan., said he has applied to the U.S. Geological Survey to have the city's name changed to Trails End.

The administrator said he collected the proper amount of signatures and sent them in with the accompanying forms to apply for the name change, KWCH-TV, Wichita, Kan., reported Thursday. He said it could be months before researchers analyze the proposal and send it to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names for a decision.

Residents of the Sedgwick County town said accounts vary on how Spasticville got its name, but some theorize it was named for a home for the mentally handicapped that used to be located in the area.

  1. Actually, there is no town by the name of Spasticville. There is a group of houses along Highway 81 (2 Miles East of Valley Center, Ks that has had that name attached to it for the past ~50 years. There is 3 or 4 houses and 3 or 4 Salvage yards in that area. For many years there was a VFW club located in the area - about 1/4 mile off of the highway in a secluded area (I have heard that lots of illegal things went on at that club...mostly gambling). I was born and raised in Valley Center, and still live there (nearly 60 years), and never heard the area called that until the last 10 years. My understanding is that in the 30s' and 40s' the nickname was given to one of the houses in the area that was used to house mentally handicapped people....somehow, it made it's way onto some map.

  2. My family lives in "Spasticville" we find it hilarious that google maps thinks it is a town. My sister has decided that she is the mayor. Does it count as an election since her neighbors said that was fine with them? Lol the writer above is correct it is just a few houses on Broadway (hwy 81) in Valley Center. No town.

    1. I tried again in 2016, and Google maps now does indicate the location with a red "pin," though not as an official name on the map.

  5. Is Spasticville in the VC school distric? Perhaps we should move there...
We live NE of Valley Center on dirt road with nothing but farm ground as neighbors for the most part... annexed not long after moving here... with that & new school bond our taxes are more than doubled we also get a bill each year for sewer and drainage we are not even connected to. But try to argue with small town government....... If we had wanted to live in town WE WOULD HAVE MOVED THERE!. obviously a money grab on the part of VC. And so many others in the ares as well..
So..Spasticville... make sure you hold your ground and Do Not let VC annex you!!

  6. The name "Spasticville" still shows up on Facebook/social media posts. I would be very interested in knowing what steps it would take to "erase" Spasticville from the map, or as was suggested, change the name to something else. Any suggestions?
