Even the "5" isn't too hard to extrapolate, and 6 and 7 are obvious.Minnesotastanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01382888179579245181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4912713243046142041.post-10242813833779461542010-01-07T18:59:09.485-06:002010-01-07T18:59:09.485-06:00Oops... sorry about the typos!Oops... sorry about the typos!Mark Whybirdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08555481401111118176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4912713243046142041.post-14300758053203465072010-01-07T18:35:00.156-06:002010-01-07T18:35:00.156-06:00If it is the actual origins of the digits you want...If it is the actual origins of the digits you want (and I don't think the angles diagram is puporting to be the origin so much as an interesting observation/construct), then there is a mich simpler explanation: laziness
(definitely for the gigits 1, 2, and 3, maybe for four. Beyond that it gets a bit contrived).
First, you need to look at the original indian numerals. See the diagram under Origins here.
Then imagine a lazy writer not lifiting the pen properly between strokes in making the simple 1, 2 or 3 dash representations of those digits (and maybe 4). See this diagram of indian digits I just made.Mark Whybirdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08555481401111118176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4912713243046142041.post-15836795262604037242009-12-31T08:03:29.633-06:002009-12-31T08:03:29.633-06:00A long time ago I was at a multicultural fair, and...A long time ago I was at a multicultural fair, and I was told that this was how we got our Arabic numerals.
