It is a devastating social snub, where one clearly recognizes a person by making eye contact and then just as clearly turns away. It completely severs all social connection and has a lot of rules regarding who can use it against whom, and when. I googled etiquette and cut direct to be sure of my understanding.

I don't believe a call boy is related to the "Call for Phillip Morris" ad. As I learned from Paul F Tompkins' podcasts, the call boy tells actors how long until they are due on stage and the actors respond with "thank you five" or "thank you two", etc. The "call for Phillip Morris" would have been a precursor to "will Phillip Morris please pick up the white courtesy phone".It's all about the numbershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02846360621547538669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4912713243046142041.post-45129824511772535812018-04-21T20:59:59.860-05:002018-04-21T20:59:59.860-05:00scotches. A potato stuck full of razors, a prison weapon.

skylarks fly dramatically vertically straight up, with the males singing all the way up. "Unlike most perching birds, the male sings in flight, and what a flight: he starts up suddenly from the ground, goes up high in the sky––50 to 100 meters––and hovers there for a few minutes, then plummets down to land on the ground. And all this time he is singing: while he rises so high that he may be scarcely visible, while he stays aloft, while he plunges to the earth again.
