Jon Stewart's tirade re "boobs on the ground"

Jon Stewart's wit is often acerbic, but for this piece he seems truly angry ("F*ck you and your false patriotism").

The Washington Post has a backstory about the woman combat pilot. The original "boobs on the ground" comment is here (and here is the related Reddit comment thread).

  1. On one hand, I don't blame him for reacting in such an angry manner. Fox's over-reaction (whether real or manufactured) to everything Obama does or doesn't do has reached epic levels of ridiculousness. On the other, Fox News provides an endless resource of material; he needs Fox to keep it going for him to have a funny show.

  2. Well put, shibori78.
But the whole "latte salute" thing is embarrassing. Not what he did, but that it's a national conversation at all. As I read elsewhere - the guy is simultaneously dealing with two major world crises, and he forgot that he was holding his wake up juice. Big deal. I doubt very much that those Marines were offended by that. If they thought he was upholding the very letter of military courtesy, then they'd rightly see it as a lapse, as any good person occasionally has when under stress. If they already felt that he was phoning in any military courtesy, then this wouldn't surprise them.
And that comment from whoever that was about the female pilot is just stupid. It deserves no further thought than the salute gaffe. Unless you just like to be upset about things.

    1. Wrong, it is important and key to the argument. It was made by the same person who said the president lacks respect for service personnell. It is glaring proof of the hypocricy that John Stewart is criticizing.

    2. Yeah, I got that it was the same guy, but I still don't see it as "important" because I don't see how TV personalities are "important." Unless, as I said, you just enjoy getting angry about things beyond your control. If that is "wrong" so be it. I'm not losing sleep over either "issue."

  3. I had not heard the "boobs on the ground" comment. Holy Cow that was horrible.

  4. The only "counter" note is that the daily show has a reputation for trapping people in interviews, and so while all of their complaints about media are sound, their own behavoir is not actually necessarily any better. http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-09-23/don-t-ever-appear-on-the-daily-show

    1. If by "trapping," you mean that they call people into account for their utter, blatant lies and hypocrisy- then under that most narrow of definitions, you would be correct. Let's not forget that the channel where a small handful of guests with differing opinions are often drowned out and shouted down, has a legal license to lie...
