Eastern Comma (Polygonia comma)

One of the "anglewing" butterflies, listed as such for obvious reasons. The irregular wing margins obviously help them camouflage against tree bark when they overwinter as adult butterflies; they thus join the Mourning Cloaks as the first butterflies to appear as the snow melts.

This one is a "Comma" - as evidenced by the mark on the underside of the wing.

Photographed in the woods at Goose Lake in early September. The picture enlarges with a click.
