"Coqui monsters" in Hawaii

Exotic frogs have invaded Hawaii; their nocturnal whistles are reportedly louder than a chainsaw or an alarm clock. Driven to near-madness by sleep deprivation, previously non-violent people are experiencing personality changes and stomping the frogs to death...

  1. What is this "audio tape" you are talking about?

  2. If only all invasive species were so annoying to the average person, maybe we would have better laws/regulations/practices which would prevent new species from being introduced.

  3. "audio tape" would be my mistake for typing faster than I'm thinking and a reflection of my age.

At the link is a four minute audio ?file that plays on Real or Windows Media players. Is that phrased o.k.?

  4. Hawaii deserves this. Hopefully they learn their lesson. I refer to this everyday problem as "Puerto Rico Envy." I see it on a daily basis. People are like "Robert, you're so cool! How are you so cool?" And I'm like, "I'm Puerto Rican. It's natural." I just picture Hawaii's internal monologue for deciding to steal Coquis from Puerto Rico like so: "Damn. Puerto Rico is so cool. They have awesome stories and these really cool frogs that can only be found on THAT island. We need that. Disney Hawaii doesn't seem like it will come true, so having some Coquis is definitely the next best thing." Ha! Silly Hawaii.

  6. The Coqui is a tree-frog natural to the Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico. The males make a peculiar sound to attract females; the loudest and more vocal male gets the attention. The frog was presumed to live only in Puerto Rico, because attempts to export it failed. Apparently, Hawaii was successful in adopting the Eleutherodactylus coquí.

Now, for us puertorricans the Coqui's sounds is one of soothing romance and comfort; part of a cultural identity analogous to the nice chirp of crickets on a summer's night. For visitors (and now Hawaiians) is an EXTREMELY loud and annoying chirping nocturnal bird call.

I guess is the same for New Yorkers and the sound of traffic... for them a night without it should be eerie and for visitors could be annoying. Hawaiians would either learn to love OUR frog or move to New Guinea... until another idiot decides to take the Coqui over there too! :P
