I'm fiddling with the logo

The previous one used a photo of an Icelandic waterfall without permission; I'm trying to substitute one of my own. This first attempt doesn't seem quite right re proportional text. I'm not asking for votes or comments - just letting you know that the top may fluctuate from day to day as I find time to struggle with Photoshop.

This morning I changed the photo to milkweed seeds to allow black text for title. Have also tried moving the bulk of the explanatory ("newbie") text to the sidebar to make the logo less cluttered. Enough for today. (in view of the sidebar comment, maybe I should get a picture of a "cabinet of curioisities" for the logo. will check.) (curiosity cabinet photos are too detailed).

  1. The current picture (with the daisies, sort of, I'm not to good at knowing flowers) is slightly too wide. But it looks quite nice!

  2. A thought - Can you set up the page to have it shift header images from day to day? Have a dozen or so in reserve and the page just switches out for another every 24 hours?

I think that would be quite fitting for the blog - something new everyday.

  3. I vote for one of your Butterflies.
I'm sure that you have tons of those photos lying around.
I don't care much for the Daisies.
    I did like the waterfall.

  4. Another idea would be to have a photo and then a text area below it. It can be difficult to find an image where that much text doesn't detract from the image.

  5. Duck - JWalk does that, but I have no idea how to automate it - unless I did as Ross suggests and separate the text from the image as separate components.

  6. I really liked the waterfall image for its height. Sometimes, the images you post can be quite jarring, and I like having that large buffer zone so that I am not immediately confronted with an image that may be too intense for me sensibilities. I let the page sit on that large image while the rest of it loads, and then I can carefully scroll down to the title of the entry to see if it's something I'd rather skip.

  7. You might try putting a shadow under the text to make it a bit more visible.

  8. Can some one in Iceland get you the photo again? I loved it. Especially with the arc of the road, the small people, it really allowed me to get in focus the smallness of humans. I have used the photo to pause before reading what you are offering.

  9. I like the idea of changing your logo. I think that the text in white against the daisies/grass is a little distorted looking. Try the typeface on a plainer background.

I also think the size of the picture is a better choice than the one of the waterfall.

  10. You should try a contest and have fans submit photos they have taken. Set some ground rules and include the specs. Could be fun!

  11. If you like Icelandic waterfalls, including the one you had, you can go through the pictures I took when I was in Iceland and feel free to use any of them (except maybe the ones with me in them). :)

  12. I have some lovely photos of the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, which I just took last month. You're welcome to look through some if you'd like, and you can use one or more for the set up page, just let me know!

  13. I also have a picture I took when I was in Iceland that you might like. No waterfall in the picture, but some stunning countryside and black sand. I will try to find it for you and send you a link.

By the way, the picture of the waterfall reminded me of when I saw it up close and personal - one of the best experiences of my life!

  15. Nice pix Chris, and thanks to others re your offers. My problem, however, is not a lack of images, but a lack of time to manipulate them into a nice logo. The one I just tried is dreary, because the Blogger formatting template is just too restrictive. I'll need to stumble my way around Photoshop again.

rich - the Iceland waterfall photo is not lost. I used it for a post long ago - just go to the search box at the top of the blog and type in "Iceland" and you'll find it (without text). Or Google Skogafoss.

  16. Maybe it's me, but 'fiddling with the logo' seems to invite the same kinds of cautions as 'hiking the Appalachian Trail'. Please be careful.
