Anak Krakatoa is stirring...

Anak Krakatoa is the "child" of the original Krakatoa, which was literally obliterated in one of the greatest catastrophes the modern world has experienced. Simon Winchester has written an eminently readable book about that event.

The Mail Online has a set of photos showing the recent activity at Anak Krakatoa.

  1. Simon Winchester's book is excellent and more than just being about Krakatoa, it is about the slowly becoming modern world's (at the time) political, social and scientific reaction to the event.

He has also written two great books on the Oxford English Dictionary.

I had the lucky happenstance of holding his Krakatoa book in a bookstore at Chicago's O'Hair airport when a stranger came up to me and asked in an English accent if I would like the book inscribed. I turned around to ask what this person was talking about when he said that's my book. He meant that he was Simon Winchester! I retained enough composure to say that I really enjoyed the OED books and was looking forward to the new one. He signed that book and his others for me. Holding the author's book as he coincidentally comes in to sign them in some random airport bookstore has got to be some kind of lucky.
