The computer glitch at Technorati

This post will be of interest to other bloggers only. Others should just skip on down the column.

I've tracked my Technorati numbers ever since someone first linked to me a little over a year ago. About a month ago I noticed that the authority number stopped moving - up or down - after a year during which it changed every few days. I was aware that Technorati was undergoing computer maintenance issues involving changing their co-location facilities. They had posted notes saying that updates would be slow; that was reflected in the list of "latest posts" and "blog reactions," which were usually out of date and not improved by sending them a ping.

Yesterday this message was posted at the Technorati blog:

It’s been a tumultuous month. For us – and unfortunately for you.

We’re sorry for the frustration and the less than great service. While not an excuse, here is the reason:

We changed co-location facilities. We, well the four members of our ops team, moved 1,000 servers and ALL of our real-time search infrastructure. Things are now returning to normal, although slower than we would have liked.

Looking forward:
We haven’t lost any data – so when things are back to normal your link counts and authority will be exactly where they should be.

We’ll follow up in more detail so you have information on exactly which services have been affected and how, and when they’ll be completely functional again.
It will be interesting to see how the numbers have changed when the system is fully functional again.
