Deer in unusual places

I encountered the top photo yesterday, and while researching it discovered from the Snopes discussion that it was a repost of a photo from 2003. The deer carcass was discovered 25 feet in the air atop a power pole some distance from nearby railroad tracks. The severed back legs suggest a traumatic encounter with a train, but the Canadian National Railways had no report of such an incident, and if the deer's legs had been cut by the wheels, it would seem to me unlikely that the same incident would propel the carcass that high in the air.

More discussion at Snopes, as well as a link to the lower photo above which shows a 70-lb deer carcass 12 feet in the air in the crotch of a tree. It was discovered by hunters in upstate New York. Pathologic exam showed the deer had been killed by an arrow, but how its body wound up in the tree has never been elucidated. The location deep in the woods was not suggestive of a prank. Cougar???

  1. Just a point.. Delaware county (near Pennsylvania) is not "Upstate New York", despite what many new York City residents seem to believe. Very interesting article though!
