It's the season for Black Swallowtails

I've previously posted a series of entries documenting the life cycle of Monarch butterflies. Ours are now emerging from their chrysalises at a rate of about 5-10 per day, and will soon be heading toward Mexico.

Now the focus shifts to the Black Swallowtail. This past week the adults began ovipositing on plants in our garden. The image at the top shows a cluster of eggs on fennel, and below that are three eggs on three leaves of parsley. The bottom image is that of a not-very-attractive early instar; he/she will be much more impressive in a couple weeks. Stay tuned.
